Ed Vaizey MP debates democracy and British values with UTC students

UTC Oxfordshire students today welcomed their local MP, Ed Vaizey, into the school. He addressed them on why he became an MP and the important role the Conservative Party played in the creation of the UTC movement. However, the overall theme was democracy and British values. The students were delighted to get the opportunity to ask him a great range of questions and get his own personal view on subjects such as Syrian air strikes, through to whether or not Britain should leave the European Union.

Mr Vaizey relished the chance to see how local young people are forming opinions on these important political matters and even took a vote on how many in the room thought we should leave the EU, before discussing the result with them.

Many of the students got the opportunity to speak personally to Mr Vaizey, who was interested to hear about their studies and what they were hoping to achieve from their time at the UTC and their possible future careers in Science and Engineering.EdVaizey

Tom Pooley (15) said: “The session was really interesting. It’s not every day you get to speak to a politician and to hear their views.”

Ashley Withers (15) was also pleased to have the opportunity to hear Mr Vaizey speak: “It was good to have an MP in to speak and hear his perspective. All the questions from the floor were really good.”

Luke Nobes (15) was impressed with Mr Vaizey’s ability to speak to a large group in public: “He answered the questions really well, he was confident and didn’t really have to think about his answers.”
