Sports Science

Are you interested in sport, and the science behind what makes our bodies perform at their absolute best? Do you want to know more about how exercise and nutrition affects us, and how to maximise fitness and training? 

Studying for a qualification in Sport Science at UTC Oxfordshire will help you answer those questions, giving you the tools to take up a career in a variety of health or sport related areas, as well as improve your own sporting performance and wellbeing. 

The Sport Science curriculum will look at areas including risks of sports injuries, how fitness and nutrition affects performance and how the body responds to exercise.

What will I study?

The GCSE equivalent course (Cambridge National in Sport Science) will look at three main areas of study including: 

  • Reducing the risk of sports injuries and dealing with common medical conditions 
  • Applying the principles of training: fitness and how it affects skill performance 
  • Principles of anatomy and physiology  

What else will I study at UTC Oxfordshire?

In Year 10 and year 11, you’ll study the core subjects of English, Maths and Science just like at your current school, but then you’ll choose from our other range of options including computer science, geography, product design and business studies. What careers are available in Sport Science? 

Sport is one of the fastest growing employment sectors in the UK and the list of career opportunities for sport scientists is growing all the time. 

The Thames Valley is at the centre of this growth, and is quickly becoming a hub for sports technologies and science innovation. 

Some of the many career options open to those who have studied Sports Science include athlete, coach, personal trainer, nutritionist, clinical scientist, physiotherapist and teacher.
