Student secures prestigious aeronautical engineering apprenticeship with Cobham

Year 13 student, Sam, has secured a degree apprenticeship with global technology and services innovator, Cobham.

Sam’s four-year apprenticeship will begin in September and focus on aeronautical engineering.

Sam said: “Ever since learning about the amazing work that goes on at Reaction Engines, I’ve been interested in aerospace/aeronautical engineering. I know that there is a skills shortage in this area and so I began to look for apprenticeships, with Cobham being at the top of my list.”

“My dream has been to work for a big aerospace company like Cobham; they make things that really matter to people.”

“My degree apprenticeship will consist of a year of full-time education, followed by two years of combined education and work placement, and then the final year I will be out on work placement full-time. I’ll be based in Bournemouth Poole College with a work placement in a nearby Cobham site.”

“I first heard about the opportunity through our Head of Sixth Form, Sue, as I had been waiting for an aerospace/aeronautical engineering apprenticeship to come up.”

“Securing the apprenticeship was great; I knew it was something I really wanted to do and receiving the offer letter and phone call was amazing.”

“I joined UTC Oxfordshire as a pioneer student in year 10 because I wanted a challenge. I stayed on in the UTC sixth form to study the Engineering Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma and A-level maths.”

“I’m glad I chose to come here; my experience has been good and it has helped me prepare for my future. If it had not have been for Sue, I would not have got this apprenticeship. She has been a real help and set me up for my dream career.”
