UTC Oxfordshire welcomed hundreds of local residents to its school last week to experience the solar eclipse, turning a remarkable astronomical event into a memorable community celebration.
Organised by Senior STEM Technician Katrina Lawrence and supported by Headteacher Emma Reynolds, the event invited families, children and local residents onto the school field, which provided an excellent viewing location for the eclipse. Using funding from the school’s Science Outreach programme, Katrina purchased 200 pairs of solar eclipse glasses to help visitors observe the phenomenon safely.
What began as a small community event quickly exceeded expectations, with interest growing rapidly in the days leading up to the eclipse. An estimated 500 people attended, sharing eclipse glasses, using homemade pinhole projectors and enjoying the occasion together in a friendly, family-focused atmosphere. Many young people attended, including local Brownies working towards their Space badge, while families gathered with picnic blankets and camping chairs to witness the spectacle.
The event highlighted UTC Oxfordshire’s commitment to inspiring curiosity in science and engaging the wider community through STEM learning opportunities.
