Local MP Olly Glover inspires Students during visit to UTC Oxfordshire and discusses his home-made curry recipe
UTC Oxfordshire was proud to welcome Didcot and Wantage MP Olly Glover on Friday 27th February 2026 for an engaging and uplifting visit that placed STEM education and community development firmly in the spotlight.
Olly was warmly received by Headteacher Emma Reynolds, who guided him on a tour of the school’s specialist engineering and science facilities. The visit provided an opportunity to showcase the school’s innovative learning environment, employer partnerships, and commitment to preparing students for careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
During a constructive discussion with senior leaders, Olly and Emma Reynolds explored the school’s key objectives, including broadening access to STEM pathways, strengthening links with local industry, and equipping students with both technical knowledge and essential life skills. They also addressed some of the challenges currently facing staff and students — from navigating changes within the national education system to ensuring that specialist STEM schools receive the support they need to thrive.
A central theme of the conversation was how the wider education system can better serve technical schools. Both agreed on the importance of sustained collaboration between schools, employers, and the local community to create meaningful, future-focused opportunities for young people.
During his time at the school, Olly engaged with members of the Senior Leadership Team to deepen his understanding of their individual roles and responsibilities. These discussions demonstrated strong communication and professional curiosity, enabling him to explore how leaders work collaboratively with resilience and enterprise to support students academically, technically, and personally.

Following the leadership meeting, Olly met with Year 10 and Year 12 students for an open and lively Q&A session focused on the local community and prospects. Students demonstrated genuine curiosity about how education can support their long-term ambitions and personal growth.
Emmanuella O, a Year 12 student, recently spoke with Olly to raise concerns about “the lack of job opportunities” available to young people in the area, and how the Government can help them.
Emmanuella asked what more could be done to help students who are eager to gain work experience, secure part-time jobs, or begin apprenticeships but are struggling to find opportunities.
In response, Olly explained that he is actively encouraging and regularly meeting with business owners at Milton Park to support young people into employment. He said he is working with local employers to create more job and apprenticeship opportunities to help young people enter the world of work and start earning.
Laura CF, Year 10 student, has raised concerns about ongoing flooding in the Didcot area during a discussion with Olly.
Speaking about the issue, Laura asked “what more could be done to prevent flooding and better protect residents affected by repeated incidents.”
In response, Mr Glover said that Thames Water is “constantly being chased” regarding the flooding problems. He added that the matter is still under debate and stressed that “more investment is needed to improve infrastructure and reduce the risk of future flooding.”
The session concluded on a light-hearted and memorable note, with Oliver unexpectedly sharing his home-made curry recipe — much to the amusement and delight of students and staff alike.
Reflecting on the day, Headteacher Emma Reynolds said:
“We are incredibly grateful to Oliver for taking the time to visit us. His openness, encouragement, and genuine interest in our students’ futures made a real impact. It was a fantastic opportunity for our young people to see how education, ambition, and community can work hand in hand.”
What a wonderful visit it was — and UTC Oxfordshire is proud and thankful for Oliver’s time, insight and inspiration.
